What are e-ink Signs?

Electronic ink (e-ink) technology produces a low-power, paper-like display and looks very much like normal ink on normal paper. It has been used for e-readers for a number of years but is now being used more for digital signage with e-ink bus stops being a well suited application of the technology.

So what are the benefits of e-ink?

1. No power is needed to hold an image so an image on an e-ink screen will be retained even when all power sources are removed. An e-ink sign will only use any power when the content is updated so this significantly reduces the power consumption and is a key reason devices using E Ink have such long battery life. This also means signs can deployed where there is no mains power and the battery can be recharged using solar power.

2. E Ink displays don’t use a backlight as LCD displays do – instead light from the environment is reflected from the surface of the display back to your eyes and gives a paper like display. The more ambient light, the brighter the display looks and it isn’t subject to glare and is easily readable even in bright sunlight.

3. E Ink displays are comprised of an ink layer laminated to a plastic film substrate and can be made to be very light but at the same time be vandal and weather proof. This makes them easy to be fitted anywhere.

4. E-ink displays can be updated remotely using 4G/5G which is very convenient, especially if you have a lot of displays.

e-Paper Signage travel information

As already mentioned an ideal application of e-ink is for signage at bus stops where a very large number of signs are needed and power would be difficult to supply. To learn more about on e-ink bus stops please see our e-paper digital bus stops page.
