Digital signs that use virtually no power — and look like paper. Built to last.
E-ink displays only draw power when content changes. The result: wire-free installation, solar compatibility, and running costs a fraction of conventional screens.
- Near-zero power between updates
- Solar & battery compatible
- Wire-free — no mains needed
- Sunlight-readable in any conditions
- Remote update via 4G / 5G
- EU data storage · GDPR compliant
- Managed by Chroma DS cloud platform
- High-security, multi-user access

Where E-Ink Signs Excel
E-ink is ideal wherever content changes infrequently — which covers the majority of real-world signage. Here are the sectors where DMS clients see the greatest return.
- Transport & Bus Stops – DMS have deployed e-ink digital bus stops in Central London. No mains power needed — signs run via solar, updated remotely with live timetable and service data via 4G.
- Corporate Offices – Meeting room booking displays, floor directories and wayfinding — paper-thin, cable-free and perfectly legible under office lighting. Update instantly via Chroma DS.
- Healthcare – Patient room information, ward directories, appointment boards. No blue-light or flicker makes e-ink ideal for clinical environments. Fully GDPR compliant via Chroma DS.
- Retail & Shelf Labels – Update pricing and promotions across hundreds of displays simultaneously from the Chroma DS dashboard. Eliminate paper label printing entirely.
- Education – Room booking, campus wayfinding and notice boards — all on displays that run for months without attention, updating automatically when schedules change.
- Outdoor & Remote – Car parks, heritage sites, rural tourism — anywhere mains power is unavailable. Solar-powered, IP rated, 4G-connected. No infrastructure required.

E-ink vs LCD and LED for Digital Signage
E-ink digital signage offers a number of advantages over traditional LCD and LED displays, particularly where content changes infrequently and low power consumption is important. Unlike LCD and LED screens, E-ink displays reflect ambient light rather than continuously producing their own light, giving them a paper-like appearance that remains highly readable in bright sunlight while producing no screen glare. They can also consume very little power, with many E-ink displays requiring power primarily when the displayed content is changed rather than continuously. This makes E-ink particularly attractive for battery-powered, remote or environmentally conscious signage applications.
Key advantages of E-ink compared with LCD and LED:
- Extremely low power consumption – E-ink uses power mainly when the content changes, making it ideal for battery-powered and energy-efficient signage.
- Excellent sunlight readability – Unlike conventional screens, E-ink remains highly visible in direct sunlight without needing a high-brightness backlight.
- No backlight or screen glare – Its reflective display technology provides a more natural, paper-like viewing experience.
- Very long operating periods – Low power requirements can allow battery-powered signage to operate for extended periods between charges.
- Lower running costs – Reduced electricity consumption can be particularly beneficial where large numbers of displays are deployed.
- Slim and lightweight designs – E-ink panels can be incorporated into compact signage where a conventional LCD screen may be unnecessary.
- Reduced heat generation – Because there is no continuously operating backlight, E-ink produces considerably less heat than many conventional displays.
- Easy to read from different viewing angles – E-ink maintains good visibility without the viewing-angle limitations associated with some LCD technologies.
- Ideal for static or frequently scheduled information – Particularly suited to menus, timetables, wayfinding, room information, price displays, retail labels and other signage where content changes periodically rather than continuously.
- Potential environmental benefits – Very low energy consumption can help reduce the ongoing energy requirements and carbon footprint of a digital signage installation.
The main limitation is that E-ink isn’t designed for video or rapidly changing content. LCD and LED remain the better choice for advertising, video, animations, high-impact promotional content and applications where bright, vibrant colours are required. E-ink is at its strongest where low energy consumption, excellent daylight visibility and long periods between content updates are more important than motion, brightness or full-colour video.

Everything you need to know
What is E-Ink (E-Paper) Display Technology?
Electronic ink mimics the appearance of ink on paper. Unlike LCD or LED screens, e-ink is reflective — it uses ambient light rather than emitting its own, making it highly legible in daylight and direct sunlight. Once an image is set, it requires zero further power to maintain.
How Are E-Ink Signs Updated Remotely?
Our signs connect via 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi. Content is pushed from the Chroma DS cloud dashboard in seconds with no need to visit the physical screen. Because power is only drawn during the brief update cycle, batteries last months depending on update frequency.
Are E-Ink Displays Suitable for Outdoors?
Yes. The range at einksigns.co.uk includes IP-rated outdoor enclosures for all UK weather conditions. Combined with a small solar panel, an outdoor e-ink sign can operate entirely off-grid — ideal for transport stops, heritage sites and rural locations.
Why Choose Digital Media Systems?
Digital Media Systems has been designing, supplying and installing commercial digital signage since 2006, with over 15,000 screens installed across the UK. We have deployed e-ink technology in Central London bus stops, corporate buildings and transport networks. Every solution is tailored to the client, with full UK-based installation and ongoing support.
What is Chroma DS?
Chroma DS is our cloud-based platform for managing e-ink signage networks. It provides a secure, browser-based dashboard for creating content, scheduling playlists and pushing updates to any number of displays instantly. All data is stored within the EU, the platform is GDPR-compliant by design, and enterprise security features are built in as standard.
See our dedicated site at einksigns.co.uk for the complete E-Ink range (hardware specifications, display sizes, colour options, enclosure ratings and Chroma DS details).
